Why aren't PoD softback books available to US backers?

If we weren’t facing new EU regulations on exporting books and the looming specter of a trade war - we wouldn’t offer PoD books at all. Unfortunately, doing PoD books is the only way we can get a physical copy to our friends and fans outside the United States, and we need a bigger company with an international presence (DriveThruRPG) to do it. I am a person who loves physical books, and I have been told that I spend way too much time geeking out over paper weight, cover treatments, and binding quality. I know most backers don’t care about these things, but I do. And I strive to make sure that we only put out the highest quality books we can make. Bottom line, we spend a lot of time working on the meat of a game and feel that the final presentation should reflect that. We make books that will last many, many sessions at the table. We make a book that you can pass down to your kids. This is why we do offset printing, sewn binding, and cutting edge technology in the US with a company that has been printing quality hardback books for over 120 years! We want our product to be worth your money, and to us, that means a great game in a quality, hardback book.

Why aren't you shipping hardback books outside of the US?

I really wish we could! We have done so on several of our past kickstarters, even though shipping overseas is stupid expensive. Unfortunately, new EU regulations (and the current US regime’s trade wars) make this a thing of the past for small companies like ours.

We aren’t big enough to justify have a compliance agent based in the EU, which means we can’t ship anything direct to consumers outside of the US. The roller-coaster of threats and tariffs everywhere else mean that we can’t be sure what the end price of a book will end up being by the time we are ready to ship this summer.

The only way to reliably get our game outside the US, for a reasonable and predictable price, is via print-on-demand, so that’s what we have to do. All print-on-demand softback books will be fulfilled via DriveThruRPG.

International backers will be responsible for the actual printing (approx $6-$10) and shipping costs associated with their order. (See breakdown at https://help.drivethrurpg.com/hc/en-us/articles/12723268748055-Estimated-Shipping-Costs#h_01HQKAM6PVBTBFXXVPGR7WWG4V)

Wicked Clever (aka Robert Turk) has no way to track or refund any international orders submitted via DriveThruRPG (but really, their customer service is great and they promptly have fixed any issues that have come up for past backers).

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
